"Scones, a tea shop in England, a kitty & a murder - yes, please!"

When an American tourist is murdered in her quaint Oxfordshire tearoom, Gemma must solve the mystery with the help of the nosy Old Biddies and a mischievous little feline named Muesli. But between her bossy, matchmaking mother and the return of her old college love as a handsome CID detective, Gemma soon has her hands full and her head spinning!

Murder is bad for business, especially when customers think your scones are more deadly than delicious. With the body count rising and her tearoom going bust, can Gemma find the killer before things turn to custard?

A Scone to Die For Oxford Tearoom Cozy Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) HY Hanna Pearl Hewitt Books

I must admit, I don't usually read cozy mysteries that are set outside of the US, but I was intrigued by this book and decided to take a chance and I have to admit, I'm glad I did!

This is the first book in the series and takes place in a Tea Room in England. I thought perhaps the writing would be done in British English, which would slow me down in reading it, but it wasn't. I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't put it down. I do love to hear about different locations, and this book didn't disappoint and made me actually visualize the locations the author was describing.

Since there are so many other reviews describing what happens in the book, if you are reading this review and you are like me and are debating on whether or not you will like it, trust me, you will not be disappointed. I will be reading the next two books as soon as I can.

Take a chance, it will be worth it!

A Scone to Die For Oxford Tearoom Cozy Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) HY Hanna Pearl Hewitt Books Reviews

Gemma Rose is home in Oxford after eight years in Australia, working her way up the corporate ladder. She finally decided the corporate ladder wasn't for her, sold her flat, quit her job, and went home to Oxford to buy a tea room. She's hired her best friend, as well as a local handyman who, it turns out, is also a fantastic baker. Things are starting to go really well, even with the hassles that go with being in food service and hospitality.

Such as the really arrogant, hostile American tourist, who seems to be with the otherwise pleasant American tour group.

When she arrives at the tea room the next morning, she finds him dead in her courtyard, apparently having choked on a scone. But why was he there in the first place?

It's not an improvement in her already awful day when the Detective Inspector assigned to the case turns out to be her old university flame, Devlin O'Connor. They didn't part on the best of terms.

The dead American turns out to be not just some obnoxious tourist, but the head of an American pharmaceutical company, with all kinds of unexpected connections to Oxford. Quite a few people turn out to have reasons to dislike him. When one of the possible suspects turns out to be a beautiful woman that Gemma thinks Devlin is interested in, it's inevitable that she decides she has to investigate the case herself, with the help of her friends.

There's a great cast of characters here, likable and entertaining. There are some moments when Gemma does some very silly things, but she's presented overall as smart and capable, not as a ditzy fool.

Overall, entertaining and fun.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.
H. Y. Hanna has written an excellent cozy mystery. I totally enjoyed Gemma and her very interesting life in my favorite setting, Oxford. I absolutely enjoyed the details of her life and the story. Someone said there is too much "fluff" in one review but that's what I loved about the book. One person's "fluff" is my love of details and darn good storytelling. Honestly, even if there were no mystery, I would read on because I found the characters, the settings and Gemma to be a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend my days.

Enough reviews explained the story premise so I'm telling people that if you love getting caught up in a lovely setting and reading that feels like a warm sunny day spent with your best friend, H. Y. Hanna has the situation covered. She is seriously my favorite cozy writer ever.
I normally don't read English authors, but after joining a facebook group of which this author is a member of, I decided to try her first one. She just released her newest title to this series and had #1 for free. So I took a chance and I wasn't disappointed!. The main setting of this book is a small village near Oxford and Oxford University. Our heroine has come home from Australia where she was very successful in her job. But she missed England and decided to change careers opening a tea room in her village. She's only had the tearoom has been opened a short time when a murder takes place in the courtyard next to her shop. Since she feels the police aren't doing a very good job of finding the murderer, she decides to do her own investigating. Ms. Hanna has developed some interesting characters, including 4 snoopy old ladies, her mother, several friends and one mischievous cat. She also has a thing for the police officer who is in charge of the investigation. (They use to go together at Oxford!)
I read this book in one sitting. I plan on reading more from this author!

By the way, the author included the recipe for the scones! I hope she does the same for the cinnamon rolls sometime!
Enjoyable read. It was a good introduction to the characters. Some readers complained about the absurdity of a nearly 30-year old single woman who gave up a successful career in Australia to open a tea shop in England and worrying about how to make ends meet. In the story, she said that she bought the tea shop and sank all of her savings into restoring it - that's why she's living with her parents. Starting up a new business is expensive. At the time of the story, the tearoom has only been open a few weeks, so she isn't an immediate success.

Another comment complained about the author adding a glossary at the end of the book. I didn't need to look up any of the terms used, since the author included an explanation within the context of the story. The glossary was simply a courtesy to American readers (the author is British) who might not be familiar with British slang. Would anyone expect a British reader to be familiar with all American slang?

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
